ISLANDWOOD AT NATIONAL MARINE EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE

ISLANDWOOD AT NATIONAL MARINE EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE

Last week IslandWood Urban School and Community Education Manager, KayLani Siplin, and Partnerships Manager, Celina Steiger, joined the NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and the Seattle Aquarium at the National Marine Educators Association Conference in Bellingham.

We all gathered to speak about our participation in the Working Towards Racial Equity (WTRE) project, led by UC Berkley’s Lawrence Hall of Science and funded by the National Science Foundation. The two-year project was developed to support environmental and outdoor science organizations in building capacity to foster equitable, inclusive, and culturally relevant work environments and organizations.

As part of a panel, KayLani and Celina participated in a lively discussion about their journey, challenges, accomplishments, and new insights about working towards racial equity.

Though this project is a long-term work in progress, taking a moment to share our learnings with other organizations was inspiring.
