Climate change is one of the most urgent issues facing us today. Human behaviors and systems are rapidly accelerating climate change, endangering life on earth, and disproportionately impacting nondominant communities.
Increasing climate literacy is central to our work in environmental education, and to creating a more equitable and sustainable world. We believe strongly that inspiring action for the environment requires increased knowledge and awareness about the environment.
That’s why we’re working to help provide educators with the tools they need to incorporate climate science in their teaching, reaching 30,000 adults and children each year with environmental learning that is tangible and actionable now.
After participating in our professional development workshops, 92% percent of teachers reported feeling confident incorporating climate science into their teaching, up from just 21% prior to our workshops.

IslandWood acknowledges that the land on which we gather is within the ancestral territory of the suqʷabš “People of Clear Salt Water” (Suquamish People). Expert fisherman, canoe builders and basket weavers, the suqʷabš live in harmony with the lands and waterways along Washington’s Central Salish Sea as they have for thousands of years. Here, the suqʷabš live and protect the land and waters of their ancestors for future generations as promised by the Point Elliot Treaty of 1855. While the majority of our work takes place on Suquamish and Duwamish (dxʷdɐwʔabʃ) land, we also conduct programs on the land of the Snohomish (sduhúbʃ), Puyallup (spuyaləpabš), Muckleshoot (buklshuhls), Skokomish (sqoqc’bes), and S’Klallam (nəxʷsƛ̕ay̕əm) peoples.
