AFTERNOON ON THE TRAILS

August 28, 2022 @ 6:00 am - 10:00 am

IslandWood’s trail systems will be open this day only for your self-guided exploration. Hike leisurely down the Spine Trail and traverse the ravine on a suspension bridge. In late summer, is Mac’s Stream still flowing? Where does the water go? Our naturalist on duty will have the answer.

Meander through hemlock and red-cedar woods and make your way towards Mac’s Pond and watch the dragonflies zipping by! to scout for ospreys and eagles. Head up the Cemetery Trail and peek in the Mill Worker’s Cabin or head south to explore the more elusive Lower Loop Trail full of mossy wonders, maidenhair ferns, and hooty owls. Heading back to campus, take the Spine Trail north and weave around the cattail marsh, stopping at the Bird Blind to observe waterfowl and other wildlife.

Both treehouses and our Forest Canopy Tower will be open for your visit, too. Our wonderful docents will be on the trails to answer questions you might have about our campus, its history, and any natural discoveries you have.

We’ll have maps for you so you can find your way around and will be happy to suggest a route that is suitable for your group size, abilities and interests.

If you’ve come before, we welcome you back again.  There is always something new to see every season!

  • All ages welcome!
  • Bring a picnic or early dinner if you like, pack it in – pack it out.  Leave No Trace.
  • Please no dogs unless they are a service animal, thank you.
  • Some of our trails accommodate strollers and wheelchairs, for more information please ask our Greeters for the best routes to accommodate your party size and abilities upon arrival.
  • Please note that Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District have a Gear Bank where you can check out various gear – including a Hippocampe wheelchair! This is a free service to our community. We have tested the Hippocampe on our packed gravel trails at IslandWood and it works GREAT. If you need this resource, please visit our friends at BIMPRD at: https://biparks.org/gearbank/

Your health and safety, as well as that of our staff, is our first priority. Wearing a mask is optional and we are following all CDC and local state guidelines for your safety.

IslandWood is grateful for the support from The Fletcher Bay Foundation that supports free and low-cost public programs on our campus all year long.
