Derek Jones, M.Ed., Urban Programs Coordinator (BrightWater)

Derek began his career in environmental education as an IslandWood graduate student in 2009. A native of Bellingham, Washington, Derek spent his childhood searching for every last amphibian in and around the ponds, forests, and shopping malls of South Everett. Currently he manages IslandWood’s programs at the Brightwater Education Center in Woodinville where he feels privileged to work closely with students and adults from the area that he grew up in. Derek has been at Brightwater since before the doors first opened, and he’s helped cultivate the school, community, and teacher professional development programs since 2011. He has also served as adjunct faculty in the Urban Environmental Education program at Antioch University since 2018. Derek has committed his professional life to sharing his passion for urban systems and understanding how they impact and shape our communities, both human and non-human. When not at work, you can usually find him looking under a rock or a log with his son and daughter or on
a soccer
field somewhere.
