If the Indian Plum is any indicator, the days are getting longer. Look for their slender, red-scaled leaf buds, as well as other signs of spring as you walk through campus. The IslandWood forest is beautiful at all times of year and in all weather, but if this day brings rain, linger a little longer in our Great Hall and classrooms and once outside, take shelter in our tree houses and bird blind.
A volunteer docent will lead this three-hour walk through our ecologically diverse campus, including a cattail marsh, pond, forest, and ravine, as well as field structures such as a suspension bridge and tree house. In addition to natural history, you will learn about our educational programs and the sustainable design of our buildings. This tour is for adults and teens 15 and up.
- Wear comfortable shoes. The 2-3-mile walk is moderate (with possible mud, steep hills, and gravel).
- Wear weather-appropriate clothing; much of the tour takes place outdoors.
- Water bottles are encouraged, but please no food.
- We ask that no children younger than 15 years old be brought on the tour. (Infants are welcome.)
