Voices of the Wild: Joe Reilly Inspires Students Through Song

Our Artist in Residence program gives School Overnight Program students multiple ways to learn, make sense of, integrate, and experience the natural world. Recently, IslandWood had the pleasure of welcoming artist Joe Reilly. With a passion for music that resonates deeply with nature, Joe’s artistic journey focuses on the power of song. We caught up with him to learn more about his musical background, his work with students, and how nature fuels his creative expression.

What art medium do you specialize in?

Singing and songwriting with guitar and voice.

What draws you to those mediums?

I grew up listening to my parents sing and play guitar at home and in church. They inspired me, as did other folk singers. The guitar seemed like a good instrument to help bring forth the songs that were in my heart.

What do you love about them?

I love being able to communicate emotions and insights through songs that can then reach other peoples’ hearts. It is a meaningful form of connection and helps us remember a deep part of our humanity.

How does nature inspire your work?

I love spending time in nature and being reminded of my interdependence and interconnections with all beings. When I spend time walking in the woods or listening to the water in a lake or river, I receive song ideas. Natural areas are also great places to sing!

What do you hope students in the School Overnight Program take away from their experience with art, and with you?

My hope is for young people to feel empowered in expressing their voices in creative ways that allow them to share their true selves with one another and with the world.
