IslandWood began as a singular, unique place. A place created to help students see themselves – and their world – differently. But seeing the world differently isn’t always about going somewhere else. Sometimes it’s about looking around you and opening your eyes to things you’ve never noticed, or never thought about before. Like the impact our actions have on our communities, the planet, and the people we share it with.
Today, IslandWood is more than a single place. Whether our work happens on Bainbridge Island, in Seattle public schools and neighborhoods or at the King County Brightwater Treatment Plant, we’re creating thoughtfully-designed experiences that help students deepen their understanding of their environment and discover the impact they can have on their world and community. Experiences designed to shift perspectives in a way that unlocks curiosity and personal purpose.
This, we believe, is the first step in breaking down the barriers and inequities that prevent us all from working together to care for the planet. Please join us as we come together to create a more equitable and sustainable future.
Dinner in the Woods couldn't happen without the passion and engagement of our 2019 Host Committee:
Gretchen Hunt Andrews and Ted Andrews
Debbi and Paul Brainerd
Laury and Bill Bryant
Ellie and Brendan Fields
Shelly Hall and Steven Rogers
Marguerite and Mort Kondracke
Martha Kongsgaard and Peter Goldman
Elizabeth Shonsey and Dave Johnson
Marilyn and John Warner
Be delighted by our uniquely curated auction items. Check back for a preview!
Leave the gowns and tuxedos in the closet. This gala is Pacific Northwest casual – jeans, flannels, or fleeces are encouraged.
Can't Attend? Join our Matching Challenge
Even if you can't join us for Dinner in the Woods, you can still play a critical role in its success with a gift to our Dinner in the Woods Matching Challenge. Your gift will both support our work in a meaningful and lasting way and inspire others to give bigger and engage more deeply. Will you join us?
Here's how your gift can support our work:
$25,000—Ensures equitable access to our School Overnight Program by funding an entire 5th grade from a high-needs school.
$10,000—Puts our graduate program in reach by providing a scholarship to a future educator, who will have a multiplier effect in our community.
$5,000—Funds teacher professional development and local field studies that get students solving real environmental problems in their own schoolyard and communities.
$2,500—Tends the Garden Classroom, ensuring the teaching tools, educational staff, and resources needed to continue delivering meaningful garden education programming.
$1,000—Unlocks curiosity and sense of personal purpose by providing scholarships for four students in our School Overnight Program.
Ferries leave Seattle at 3:05 pm, 3:50 pm, and 4:45 pm. You may drive your car onto the ferry and park at IslandWood. If you plan to drive your car onto the ferry, we suggest you arrive at the ferry dock at least 30 minutes early as Saturday afternoon ferries in the Spring, especially on a sunny day, can get crowded.
If you'd like to walk onto the ferry and leave your car in Seattle, please do! We will provide transportation between the Bainbridge Island Ferry Terminal and IslandWood for the 3:50 pm and 4:45 pm ferries to the Island and the 9:45 pm and 10:30 pm sailings returning to Seattle. We recommend parking at the 1st & Columbia (US Bank) Parking Lot and the Waterfront Place Lot #103 .
The following sponsors have provided critical funding for our programs and the students and educators we serve. We are grateful for their generous support.
