We’ve started to plant seeds with School Overnight Program students in the greenhouse!
Here at IslandWood, we’ve been busy tending to our lovely garden, and guess what? We’ve just planted our potatoes! Ah, the humble potato – a staple in kitchens around the world, and a delightful crop to grow, especially with kiddos. Curious why? Well, let’s dig into it!
- Digging for treasure: Harvesting potatoes is like going on an underground adventure. You never know what size or shape you’ll find!
- The tell-tale flop: Potatoes have a funny way of telling you “I’m ready!” They just flop right over when those yummy spuds are good to go.
- Garden buddies for life: Once you plant potatoes, they’re there to stay. They just keep on coming back!
- From kitchen scrap to garden star: Got a potato that’s sprouted in your pantry? That’s a garden waiting to happen!
- Tough as nails: Potatoes are super easy to grow, and they put up with a lot. Perfect for new gardeners!
- Plant them anywhere: Buckets, bags, raised beds, or straight in the ground – potatoes are all about options.
- Potato fun facts: Did you know there are over 5,000 kinds of potatoes? One cool kind called the Ozette-Nootka has been grown here in the Northwest for centuries by the Makah tribe!
Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a novice enthusiast, there’s something truly magical about growing your own spuds. Until next time, happy gardening!
