SKILLS OF A NATURALIST

May 19, 2021 @ 3:00 am - 4:30 am

$10
Build your skills as a naturalist in this three-week series of outdoor classes offered for adults at IslandWood.

Are you a mossback Northwesterner, new resident, or somewhere in between? If you’ve fallen in love with Washington State’s lowlands and have been looking to learn more, then this is the class for you. Each week we’ll explore IslandWood’s trail systems on the south end of Bainbridge Island and leave no stone unturned. We’ll put the stone back, though, because that’s the right thing to do! Join professional staff naturalist, Christina Doherty, to deepen your observations in the natural world and build your skills in botany, wildlife tracking, zoology, birding, marine ecology, and reading the forested landscape. Each week we’ll let the phenology of the forest guide us as we learn in tune with these longer days of spring. In each class we’ll practice with the tools of a naturalist, including hand-lenses, field guides, dichotomous keys, and microscopes in our outdoor wet lab.

Christina Doherty is a Master Birder (Seattle Audubon, 2011), WDFW Wetland Monitor (2014), Certified Beach Naturalist (2014), and Certified Interpretive Guide (National Association of Interpretation (2015), and has been joyfully teaching environmental education for over 20 years.
