Like mushrooms, but don’t know where to start? IslandWood is the perfect place to start a lifelong learning journey with fungi. The Pacific Northwest is turning a corner towards drizzly, cool days – and that means our local fall mushrooms are in season now but won’t last forever. The fungi in our forests come in a variety of colors, shapes, textures and yes, even odors. Learn about the lives of mushrooms in your backyard and be prepared to ‘get your geek on’ with other mycology enthusiasts.
Come hike our trails with the expert foragers from the Kitsap Peninsula Mycological Society as your guides. You’ll learn where to look for different species and identification tricks of the trade. You have the option to choose the mushroom hike best suited for your party. Sign up for the early session if you are a family with children or the afternoon session if your party is adults-only. Our guides have designed hikes that are age-appropriate, so please select the correct hike time. Both the Family Hike and the Adult Hikes will take the same routes along our trails and see more or less the same mushrooms, however the depth of content and language (Latin!) will be more extensive for the Adult Hikes.
We work to ensure that all reasonable accommodations are in place so that everyone can fully participate and learn during their time on our campus. All indoor spaces and many of our outdoor spaces and field structures were built and are continually maintained to meet ADA code, adhering to WAC 51-50.
