Join us for a special community gathering as we celebrate the enduring legacy of IslandWood’s grandmother, Vi Hilbert, and honor Suquamish tribal member and friend of IslandWood, Ed Carriere.
This year, we proudly recognize Ed Carriere as the embodiment of the “Spirit of Vi Hilbert.” His remarkable achievements, including his recent recognition as a National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage fellow, inspire us all.
Ed Eugene Carriere’s journey as a master basket weaver began under the tutelage of his great-grandmother, Julia Jacob. From her, he inherited the ancient traditions of Salish basketry, specializing in the intricate craft of clam baskets. With an estimated 600+ clam baskets created throughout his life, Carriere’s dedication to his art is a testament to his deep connection to his heritage.
Today, Carriere’s baskets serve as a bridge between generations, sharing the rich cultural and artistic heritage of the Salish Sea and its people.
