June 9, 2019 @ 6:00 am - 8:00 am

Join us for an afternoon of Native American Storytelling in our Great Hall.  Gain insight into the art and culture of Coast Salish communities as you enjoy the stories of Western Washington tribes as told by Native American artist, storyteller, and educator, Roger Fernandes.

About the Artist:

Roger Fernandes, or Kawasa, is a member of the Lower Elwha Band of the S’Klallam Indians from the Port Angeles, Washington area.

Roger started storytelling with simple legends, then moved into telling myths, creation stories, flood stories, and hero stories. In sharing these types of stories Native people can teach non-Natives about the aspects of their culture that go beyond food, shelter, and clothing. These stories actually define the culture of the tellers.

Roger is involved in art organizations and initiatives by and for Native American artists. He won a folklife award from the Washington Arts Commission for his work in teaching about Coast Salish art. He also has a degree in Native American Studies from the Evergreen State College.

Thank you to the Bainbridge Community Foundation for the generous grant that allows us to share our School Overnight Program Artists in Residence with our community.

We work to ensure that all reasonable accommodations are in place so that everyone can fully participate and learn during their time on our campus. All indoor spaces and many of our outdoor spaces and field structures were built and are continually maintained to meet ADA code, adhering to WAC 51-50.
