Maggie Sandusky, Staff Instructor

Pronouns: she/her/hers

Maggie grew up moving around as a part of an Air Force Family. However, her time living near her mom’s hometown on Cape Cod sparked a passion for environmental science and biology. Growing up there she discovered a strong connection to the ocean and coastal habitats. This passion led her to pursue a degree in Conservation Biology from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry where she was immersed in field education and experiential learning. Throughout her time at SUNY-ESF Maggie worked in The Bioacoustics and Behavioral Ecology Lab researching how Humpback Whale and South Atlantic Whale calls relate to their behavior.  She also had opportunities to study the chemistry of the otolith of Black Crappie and Greengill Sunfish for evidence of exposure to hypoxic conditions.

Maggie has worked in both environmental education and field science across the United States in Massachusetts, New York, Colorado, and now, Washington! From these experiences she’s grown to value and seek ways to intersect the two fields. Through these opportunities Maggie has been able to participate and create community conservation programs that have focused on stewardship, collaboration, and climate adaptation. She is grateful to continue to work with beautiful communities in beautiful areas such as IslandWood and strives to promote stewardship as a value of a strong community.
