Laura Brown, M.S.W. Candidate, Educator, Urban School Programs

Laura grew up being awed by the wonders of the natural world in the alpine lakes of the North Cascades, the granite slabs of Yosemite, the redwoods and craggy coasts of northern California, and especially her own backyard. She’s spent the last six years leaning into that awe, and endeavoring to share it with others through community building and place-based education. At Teton Science Schools in Jackson, WY, she developed and delivered experiential science programming for participants of all ages and backgrounds, as both an educator in direct practice and a trainer and mentor for AmeriCorps service members entering the field. Laura approaches her role as a facilitator with cultural humility, joyful curiosity, and student- and environment- centeredness. She is currently pursuing a Masters in Social Work at the University of Washington, with an interest in bringing place-based pedagogy to social change movements and infusing science education with the values of collective liberation. She is thrilled to be working with IslandWood’s Urban School Programs, to continue engaging in the transformative power of collaborative inquiry and learning that is rooted in place. Outside of work, Laura is an avid crossword puzzler, outdoor adventurer, and creative storyteller.
