Derek Churchill is both a forester and a scientist. He currently works as a forest health scientist for the Washington Department of Natural Resources. He previously ran his own forestry consulting company for 13 years that specialized in ecological forestry for a wide range of private and public landowners in the Pacific Northwest. He was also a research scientist at the School for Environmental and Forest Sciences at the University of Washington focusing on restoration of dry and moist forests and using LiDAR in management applications. He lives on Vashon Island where he owns 13 acres of forestland and has been involved in community forestry for 20 years with the Vashon Forest Stewards and Vashon – Maury Island Land Trust.
