Day 41 – Race & Equity

Day 41 – Race & Equity

Studies show that students learn best when they are in the presence of educators that can act as “windows and mirrors” for them – who can share identities, content, and stories that reflect their own experiences as well as the experiences of others.

Several years ago, a group of IslandWood educators began a satellite chapter of Building Anti-Racist White Educators (BARWE), a group that originally began in Philadelphia. Last week, our group got together to reflect on why it is so critical to have a diverse pool of educators, ways to increase the hiring and retention of educators of color, and the barriers that stand in the way of these efforts.

If you’re an educator or are interested in learning more we encourage you to read the following articles we’re finding helpful and click through to reflect on some key questions from BARWE that our educators are grappling with as well.
