Through our Artist in Residence program, professional artists lead sessions with students attending our School Overnight Program. Artists share a variety of mediums, including sculpture, poetry, drumming, painting, collaging, printmaking, yoga, and songwriting and invite students to have their own experience of the artist’s modality. We believe that art gives students multiple ways to learn, make sense of, integrate, and experience the natural world. Most recently, Artist in Residence Joe Reilly shared his incredible talents as a singer & songwriter with students from Kitsap Lake Elementary School. In this video, you get a view into the process he walks students through as they write and sing an original song about their time at IslandWood! [You can read the full lyrics to their beautiful song below the video.]
Lyrics written by Team Wave of Kitsap Lake Elementary School
“Nature”
It’s a very peaceful place
The community is amazing
It is really calm and beautiful here
It gives a bigger perspective
Of nature
It feels like we’re a lot further out
You’re able to learn a lot more about
Nature
Nature n-n-n-Nature (x2)
Wonder and curiosity
Nature n-n-n-Nature (x2)
The strong sense of community (yeah!)
Nature n-n-n-Nature (x2) (yeah!)
There’s an opportunity
To reset – reset
In community
We reset-reset
Things have history
Don’t forget
The plants and animals and us
All connect – respect
[Instrumental]
Bridge:
All the different ways people
Support one another
When they come together
Everybody loves the cabins – yeah!
Nature n-n-n-Nature (x2)
Wonder and curiosity
Nature n-n-n-Nature (x2)
The strong sense of community (yeah!)
Nature n-n-n-Nature (x2) (yeah!)
