Debbi and her husband Paul co-founded IslandWood in 1999, after learning that Washington State mandated environmental education but only half of Puget Sound schoolchildren had access to environmental education programs. She is an active volunteer whose primary philanthropic interests include conservation, improving access to environmental education, and supporting sustainable community development. Debbi and her husband, Paul Brainerd, are also the founders of The Headwaters in Glenorchy, New Zealand, a sustainable tourism and community development project currently slated to open in late 2017. Debbi has served as Board Chair of IslandWood, as well as Board Chair of the Bloedel Reserve, an award-winning public garden on Bainbridge Island, WA. She and Paul were recognized by Cascade Land Conservancy with a Lifetime Achievement Award and received the University of Washington College of Education’s Distinguished Service Award.
