Docent Corner

The Latin word doceo means "to teach." IslandWood docents are volunteers who share with visitors the magic of IslandWood through public site tours.

The docents help educate visitors about IslandWood's mission while guiding them on a tour of our sustainably designed campus and many of the trails on the 255 acre site. Docents receive extensive training in Puget Sound natural and cultural history as well as detailed facts about the buildings and outdoor classrooms on campus. As part of their three-month training program, they also gain effective interpretive communication skills.

For more information about IslandWood's docent program, please contact Volunteer Resources at volunteer@islandwood.org or (206) 855.4300.

Marsh

Much like a sponge, the cattail marsh provides a natural filtration process for the environment around it. It is estimated that over 80% of all animals use a wetland at some point in their lives.
