Counselor in Training

The CIT program at IslandWood provides a wonderful opportunity to be a part of an exciting educational environment. Located on 255 acres on Bainbridge Island, IslandWood was founded on a unique mission: to provide exceptional learning experiences and to inspire lifelong environmental and community stewardship. Our program serves pre-school to 10th grade participants from King and Kitsap counties.

Position Description

IslandWood offers 16-18 year olds volunteer CIT positions during the summer of 2008. As a CIT, you will work with a Lead Instructor to provide hands-on, field- based environmental education programs on IslandWood’s campus.

Training

Tentative dates June 16 and June 20, 2008. Times TBA

Sessions

Three three-week sessions are available. Session I: June 23-July 11, Session II: July 14-August 1, Session III: July 28-August 15.

C.I.T. Responsibilities
  • M-F: 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
  • Assist a lead Summer Staff Instructor with hands-on, outdoor activities each week.
  • Ensure the safety of participants at all times.
  • Lead filler activities such as group games, stories, songs, etc.
  • Be the “sweeper” for the group. Walk in the back of the group and count number of children occasionally.
  • Help collect snacks and food for your field group.
  • Assist with activity set up and clean up.
  • Arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of each camp in order to prepare for the day and to help with the registration process, and plan to stay at least 30 minutes beyond the end of the program for clean up and to check in with your lead instructor.
  • Participate in a weekly debrief on Fridays immediately following the family sharing time for parents and check-out.
  • Abide by IslandWood’s safety procedures and protocols as stated in your Summer Camp Assistant Instructor Handbook.
  • Assist in all group games during the check-in, check-out process.
  • Participate in a summer camp training.

Qualifications

 

  • 16-18 years of age by June 18, 2008
  • Strong interest in environmental education and working with children
  • Current First Aid and CPR by training date
  • Strong interest in working with children and outdoors
  • Flexible and ability to work as part of a team
  • Dedicated to being a positive role model for children
  • Dependable, on-time, and responsible

Compensation

 

  • Successful completion of two to three summers as a CIT may lead to a paid Lead Instructor Position for future summer programs
  • Work experience in education
  • Opportunity to learn from educators and about the environmental education field
  • Community service hours approved by your school
  • A letter of recommendation following a successful completion of the program upon request
  • This is a volunteer position
