Maria Coryell-Martin
Artist Bio:
Maria Coryell-Martin has been exploring
the world with sketchbook in hand since a young age. Her first grade elementary
school teacher, Aki Kurose, told her, "A creative person is never
bored," a saying she has taken to heart.
Maria graduated from Carleton College in 2004 with a degree in studio
art and intensive studies in French.
During her time there, she traveled
extensively, creating art in West Africa, the South Pacific, and Southeast Alaska. After graduation, she left the country
to travel for one year as a Thomas J. Watson
Fellow to explore remote regions through art. Since traveling to Antarctica as artist-in-residence with Quark Expeditions, Maria has visited all
seven continents.
Home in Seattle,
WA, Maria is developing her field
work in the studio and planning future expeditions. Her project, “Portraits of
Ice, Witnessing Climate Change through Art,” is formally recognized by the International Polar Year as project #1182 and
she is a member of the Polar Artists
Group and Explorers Club.
