Why Have Outdoor Education Programs?

The reasons to have time in an outdoor classroom are as numerous and varied as the students who attend. For some, four days at IslandWood is one of few opportunities to discover the wonders of the natural world as an exciting place to learn. For others, learning through action enables them to display their learning strengths that are not well-served inside four walls. For all, however, the experience of exploring a variety of ecosystems or investigating the health of a watershed's streams will solidify an understanding of those concepts that no learning in a classroom can offer.
