Island Roots

Island Roots (13 minutes) is the story of the Filipino pioneers who came to Bainbridge Island in the 1920's and 30's to work the land. It is the story of their relationship with Japanese American strawberry farmers and Canadian First Nation migrant workers. It is the story of the land, and how the Filipino community became its stewards during World War II.

The accompanying curriculum guide includes lesson plan to help teachers develop active approaches to using Island Roots in the classroom. It includes background essays to further enrich student understanding of Filipino American culture. To see a teacher using this film, click here.
