Student Engagement in Education for Sustainability

Facilitator: Jacob Glickman (student), Debbie Shapiro (teacher) & Greg Williamson (program supervisor)
Strand: Why EfS

This arts-inspired, student-led participatory session will address the roles young people can play in education for sustainability, and in efforts to improve and heal our schools, our communities, and our world.  Learn what Washington students have done to influence the decisions that affect them in social, economic, and environmental sustainability efforts.  If you are a student attending SESI, this is the room you want to be in, because this is where we'll be forming the "design team" for youth-led social change activities for the coming year.  If you are an adult ally, you'll see a student-driven process in action, and leave with next steps to more fully engage young people in your own community.

Environmental Justice and Placed Based Experiential Education

Facilitator: Center for the Improvement of Student Learning (CISL) Facilitator, OSPI
Strand: Social and Economic Dimensions of Sustainability

In order to close the academic achievement gap of many of our students of color, our traditional public education system needs to undergo a paradigm shift. Culturally competent teachers who authentically engage their students in relevant and rigorous learning can close achievement gaps. In this session, we will focus on utilizing the environmental justice movement ideology and place based experiential education to create culturally competent classrooms, increase student learning, and close achievement gaps.

Curriculum Design – Education for Sustainability in Primary and Secondary Schools

Facilitator: Tim Bombaci, Elementary/Middle School Science Teacher, Manson School District, Manson, Washington & Ben Wheeler, Social Studies Teacher, Explorer West Middle School, Seattle Washington
Strand: Curriculum Design Workshop

The facilitators will share design process options, from setting goals for curriculum development and integration to building community. Participants will have a chance to discuss their challenges and problem-solve through a collaborative process. We will identify lessons, units, and projects to develop and execute in the classroom.

Assessment for Global Citizenship

Facilitators: Margaret Reed Millar, Senior Program Associate, Council of Chief State School Officers; Victor Nolet, Ph.D., Professor, Secondary Education, Western Washington University; Gilda Wheeler, Program Supervisor, Environmental and Sustainability Education, Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction
Strand: Authentic Assessments in EfS

This session will provide participants an opportunity to build assignments and assessments pertaining to Global Citizenship. New Global Competencies from CCSSO provide a framework for preparing responsible citizens for an environmentally sustainable, globally interconnected and diverse society. Participants will consider global competence assignments that can potentially be uploaded to the EdSteps Formative Assessment System. The workshop also will provide an opportunity for participants to examine OECD's International Programme for Student Assessment (PISA) Framework and to practice building assessment items similar to those used in the PISA multi-country assessment program.
