Degree Paths

Satisfactory completion of the course of study at IslandWood earns a Certificate in Education, Environment and Community. There are several options available for those who wish to further their studies to complete an advanced degree.

Participants in IslandWood's EEC program have a variety of opportunities for continuing their studies:

Master of Education at the University of Washington

A majority of our EEC program participants choose to enroll in the College of Education's M.Ed. Program.  Students accepted to IslandWood usually apply to the University of Washington by either a May 1st deadline, or a November 1st deadline.

For these students, about half of their coursework - up to 21 credits depending upon which of the three degrees - is completed at IslandWood. The rest of their degree requirements are met with 2-3 additional quarters at the UW's Seattle campus.

Master's of Science in Biology for Teachers at the University of Washington

The MSBT option at the University of Washington is well suited to candidates with a strong science background and a desire to teach at a secondary level. This has also been a good option for Master's Students who already have their certification.

Master's of Arts in Teaching (MAT) with certification at Antioch University Seattle

Many of our EEC Alumni have continued on to earn their teaching credentials upon leaving IslandWood. Antioch University Seattle will accept 23 credits towards their MAT (with certification) program.  This enables a smooth second year master's degree with certificate opportunity.

Master's in Teaching (MIT) with certification at the University of Washington

We are in the process of determining a partnership with the Masters in Teaching Program at the University of Washington. The number of credits that transfer depend on the University, so we recommend meeting with a program adviser to understand their most current credit transfer guidelines.

Master's Degree through another university

Students have chosen other degree programs upon leaving IslandWood.  Some have gone into Research Science programs. Others have worked on degrees in Planning or Policy.  Depending upon the university and the program, many of the credits earned at IslandWood may transfer to that program.  Students will have a transcript with 21 graduate credits from the University of Washington, College of Education, and an additional 13 graduate credits on a transcript from Seattle Pacific University's SPIRAL program.
