Admissions
Requirements
To be admitted to the Graduate Residency in Education, Environment and Community at IslandWood (EEC) program you must have:
- An undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university (minimum 3.0 grade-point average preferred).
- Experience and/or interest in education.
Tuition
Tuition for 2010-2011 is $15,565.
Tuition includes:
- 13 graduate courses throughout the year.
- Up to 21 credits toward the partnered Masters degree program at the University of Washington (These credits should transfer to most Universities & Colleges as well)
- An additional 18 credits of study (These credits should also transfer to most Universities & Colleges)
- A year long teaching practicum with extensive mentoring by education staff and faculty
- Professional development opportunities in subjects such as science education, natural history, wilderness medicine, art education and technology
- Low faculty/student ratio with extensive advising, mentoring, and interactions
- Board for those weeks when teaching in the School Overnight Program
Other Fees:
Students are responsible for service and activity fees charged by the University of Washington. For the IslandWood EEC class of 2010, these fees amounted to $450. These fees are subject to change by the University of Washington.
The 2010-2011 cost of living on site is $4,380. Housing includes a private, furnished room with phone, high-speed Internet and other utilities, as well as a shared common area with kitchen, full laundry and computer facilities.

Application Deadlines for 2010
The EEC program notifies applicants on a rolling basis. Decisions cannot be made until all application materials have been received. The following incentives have been created for early applications. When all application materials are received by January 1, 2010, a $500 tuition discount is applied; applications received by February 15, 2010 receive a $250 tuition discount.
Students must also be accepted for Graduate studies at the University of Washington’s College of Education – whether they intend to continue at the University to complete at Masters program or not. Read more...
Financial Aid
Loans
Students who plan to continue at the University of Washington and matriculate into one of the Masters in Education Degrees are eligible for federal student loans upon acceptance at the University of Washington. Others (Non-Matriculated students) are eligible for career and continuing education loans through private lenders. Please contact the EEC program coordinator for a list of lenders.
Campus Jobs
Paid campus jobs are available at IslandWood in various departments. Students apply for and are assigned to their jobs in October each year, after the completion of orientation.
Scholarships
The EEC program has a limited number of scholarships available for graduate students. Scholarships have been created to encourage diversity and help students meet their financial need. For more information, contact the program coordinator.
