Why do owls live at IslandWood?

We think Gus must likes living at IslandWood. He's been here for more than 10 years...

What do you need to survive?  Just like humans, owls need certain things to survive: food to eat and a place to live.  This is what makes up an owl's habitat.

IslandWood is the ideal habitat for Barred Owls.  It has many trees for owls to nest in and lots of prey in the forest to catch and eat.

But Barred Owls didn't always live in this area.  They migrated from the eastern United States.  Just watch how their range has changed over the years.

Why has Barred Owl habitat changed so much?  Can you also imagine an owl's habitat getting smaller?  Why might that happen?
