A year of IslandWood Community Events for the whole family! Enviro-Explorations were created to provide exceptional learning experiences and to inspire lifelong environmental and community stewardship. All events occur on Sundays from 1-3 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

Sally Schauman has spent many years traveling and researching how humans have used nature for healing in current and ancient times. This event is co-hosted by The Bloedel Reserve.

Bainbridge History Forum: What Really Happened? Island native and author, Mary Woodward (In Defense of Our Neighbors), leads a discussion of how Bainbridge Island was affected by the WWII exile of many of its pioneer families. Mary will be joined by a panel of longtime residents and BIHS graduates to answer questions from you and your neighbors.

Learn how to observe and introduce wildlife and nature to your children

Sponsored by the Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS and IslandWood, this nationally recognized program trains participants to respond to emergencies in remote settings. The 80-hour curriculum includes standards for urban and extended care situations, and is designed specifically to provide you with the tools to make critical medical and evacuation decisions in remote locations.

Each year the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community brings this celebration to Bainbridge Island. We invite everyone, young and old, to bundle up against the crisp winter air, and enjoy the tradition of mochi tsuki (moe–chee sue–key), or “mochi–making.”

The Washington State Department of Ecology has identified a containment remedy to prevent historic creosote compounds from entering the environment at the Wycoff Superfund Site in Eagle Harbor. The public is invited to the Ecology Community Meeting at IslandWood, where an Expert Review Panel will be presenting solutions and addressing long-term stewardship concerns.

Join Bainbridge Island Children's Librarian, Carmine Rau, and one of our naturalists for wintry tales, craft and song.

This series includes two-hour nature walks that focus on native plants and animals. Topics vary by season and are suitable for all ages. Participate in the entire series to gain skills in tracking, plant and fungi identification, birdsong and much more. Come and share our enthusiasm for watching the changes of the seasons!

We'll search for tracks in mud or snow and take note of burrows above and below the ground. With most of the deciduous trees bare, finding empty bird nests in the treetops is much easier this time of year too. Follow a slime trail to a banana slug and see where our explorations lead us!

What goes bump in the night? Come explore our trails after dark! The days are getting longer and the night forest is getting more active. Join us as we listen for insects singing in the dark, use a special device to hear bat talk, search for flying squirrels in the treetops and hunt for night crawlers. You'll learn special adaptations animals use to see in the dark, why animals have eye shine and discover "Hoo" is raising a feathered brood in our woods.

What a Wonderful World! Join IslandWood on April 18th for the 3rd annual Enviropalooza – a celebration of National Environmental Education Week and Earth Day. An afternoon of family fun focuses on what a wonderful world we live in.

Spring is a busy time for animals. Come hear what's new in the forest. Join Carmine Rau from the Bainbridge Island Library for lively botanical tales. Let your imagination spring into action during our story time and nature crafts.

Darrin will be speaking and signing his book "Public Produce, The New Urban Agriculture." He will explore "municipal agriculture" - city officials turning to the abundance of land under public control to grow food.

Our annual celebration and fundraiser - this year back at IslandWood.

The forest is alive with activity as days lengthen and spring is in full swing! We'll listen to birdsong, identify spring migrants and watch for breeding bird behavior. On a hike to a wetland, we'll search for salamander and frog eggs. The only way to know what's out there is to get out there. See you on the trail!

We'll stopover at the Mill Workers Cabin for a snack and learn the history behind the Port Blakely Mill. How long is a geoduck siphon and how has the harbor changed over time? On the shore we'll dipnet for critters and see what's living in Mac's Pond. Using field microscopes, we'll identify our catch and then set them free!

Defensive adaptations in the plant kingdom are often more intense than the animal world. Participants will be introduced to species with various chemical, physical and fungal mechanisms to defend their survival. We'll hike the IslandWood trails and have a sensory experience with the local flora of the northwest.

The Sustainability Education Summer Institute will allow participants to develop a deeper understanding of sustainability education as it applies to K-12 schools. Sessions are designed to provide specific, useful information that teachers, school administrators, and teacher educators can apply in their own classrooms and programs.
