Sponsored by the Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS and IslandWood, this nationally recognized program trains participants to respond to emergencies in remote settings. The 80-hour curriculum includes standards for urban and extended care situations, and is designed specifically to provide you with the tools to make critical medical and evacuation decisions in remote locations.

Mochi Tsuki Festival - A New Year's Celebration at IslandWood

Each year the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community brings this celebration to Bainbridge Island. We invite everyone, young and old, to bundle up against the crisp winter air, and enjoy the tradition of mochi tsuki (moe–chee sue–key), or “mochi–making.”

Exploring a Remedy for the Generations

The Washington State Department of Ecology has identified a containment remedy to prevent historic creosote compounds from entering the environment at the Wycoff Superfund Site in Eagle Harbor. The public is invited to the Ecology Community Meeting at IslandWood, where an Expert Review Panel will be presenting solutions and addressing long-term stewardship concerns.

Enviro-Explorations: Tracking in Winter
IslandWood
We'll search for tracks in mud or snow and take note of burrows above and below the ground. With most of the deciduous trees bare, finding empty bird nests in the treetops is much easier this time of year too. Follow a slime trail to a banana slug and see where our explorations lead us!

What goes bump in the night? Come explore our trails after dark! The days are getting longer and the night forest is getting more active. Join us as we listen for insects singing in the dark, use a special device to hear bat talk, search for flying squirrels in the treetops and hunt for night crawlers. You'll learn special adaptations animals use to see in the dark, why animals have eye shine and discover "Hoo" is raising a feathered brood in our woods.

Climb aboard the Floating Classroom and we'll chart a course into a diverse aquatic world! Peer overboard and search for freshwater bryozoans (sponges), grab your binocs and let's take a gander at what all that quacking is about. On the shore we'll dipnet for critters and see what's living in Mac's Pond. Using field microscopes, we'll identify our catch and then set them free!
