A unique experience
At IslandWood, what might have been an ordinary meeting back at the office becomes a watershed event for participants. We co-design our IslandWood Custom Leadership Programs with each participating group to create transformational experiences. Building on your vision and objectives, we integrate IslandWood Leadership Program curriculum and educational expertise with your business content. This deepens the messages of your meeting for lasting results.
Our approach: metaphor and innovation
We blend a variety of learning methods that take groups beyond the theoretical, creating actual hands-on experiences that encourage and sustain forthright conversations. Our educational staff and facilitators have years of experience integrating business content with experiential activities. They are experts in using the natural world as a metaphor for the broader communities in which you do business. We continually design innovative educational modules that engage participants at levels beyond what is possible in a typical work environment. We can work directly with you or partner with a facilitator of your preference.
Strengthening your team
Programs may include activities such as:
Keynote Engagement This facilitated engagement process maximizes the impact of a keynote address. This 60-90 minute session effectively engages groups from 30 to 300 people utilizing one-on-one interaction and large and small group dialogue. A Keynote Engagement session supports the clients objectives by helping to capture key information, leverage the collective knowledge of the group, provide clarity and share best practices.
Sustainable Business Session This is an interactive and informative session that explores the concept of sustainability and how it can be applied to today’s business environment. This session effectively introduces participants to the 4 E’s of Sustainability—Environment, Economics, Education, Equity—and takes a close look at how these concepts relate to business practices. Utilizing formal presentation, large group dialogue and small group interaction, this session provides an opportunity for participants to highlight current practices and explore opportunities for further integration of these practices into their business.
Learning Styles This session will utilize Myers-Briggs type indicators (MBTI) indoor and outdoor activities and group discussion to help leaders understand how different learning styles impact communication and productivity.
Tailored Teams Course An experience that enhances teamwork, promotes trust, problem-solving, and communications between individuals in a group setting. Each Teams Course element is framed within the context of the client’s business and is followed by a facilitated debrief in order support the transfer of learning to business practices. The Teams Course experience effectively encourages and highlights changes in the group’s feeling, thinking and behaving in ways that can be further explored through other program activities.
GEOTEAMS Challenge Engages participants on intellectual, emotional, and physical levels. This technology-based experience can be tailored to highlight leadership styles, strategic planning skills, time and resource management, problem solving and communication.
Sustainable Cuisine A cooking experience in the IslandWood kitchen is an educational program that focuses on putting theory into practice. This is a fun, hands-on way of exploring the concept of sustainability. A sustainable cuisine session effectively introduces participants to the 4 E’s of Sustainability—Environment, Economics, Education, Equity—and they are shown practical ways that they can implement these practices into their daily lives. Recognizing that sustainable practice begins with the individual, organizations can empower stakeholders to support sustainable practices in the workplace. This session allows participants to get a taste of sustainable practices while enhancing their own creativity and sense of community.
Kayaking Excursion Provides a recreational and educational opportunity for participants with any level of experience to enjoy the beauty of the Bainbridge coast line and Port Blakely Harbor. This excursion provides a dynamic environment for enhancing team relationships and creating new visions for the team or organization. Along the way lessons in natural and cultural history are incorporated to create a unique team building experience that is a wonderful contrast to the usual business environment. A facilitated reflection/debrief of the excursion highlights the collective visions and inter-personal connections to create a solid foundation for other elements of the program.
Arts This experience is custom tailored to encourage participants to take creative risks and find creative ways to communicate with their colleagues. An arts session will challenge participants to express their role on the team or within their business through a different lens and translate that understanding into a new vision for themselves and their group. By integrating the arts into leadership and team development, the program becomes more inclusive and is able to support different learning styles. As well, all participants begin to focus on new ways of knowing and can begin making creative connections to their work. An arts experience may include:
- Collaborative or individual visual arts
- Community drumming (focus on team building)
- Poetry Activity
Interactive Diversity Session Invites participants to creatively explore the diversity that exists within themselves, their group and their larger organization. This experience promotes understanding and the development of cultural competence by challenging participants to look from the inside out at how their cultural experience influences their actions and interactions within their organization and beyond.
Leadership Ethics session Effectively guides participants to a greater understanding of ethical challenges of being a leader in today’s business environment. This session uses indoor and outdoor settings to explore the complexity of ethical decision-making, and challenges leaders to identify the multiple stakeholders involved in their professional context.
Themes of leadership, stewardship and sustainability can be the primary focus of your Leadership Program or can be woven in throughout the program when appropriate for your objectives.
