Supporting IslandWood

IslandWood plays an important role in children’s lives by physically connecting students to the “natural world,” which is often far removed from their urban lives. For many of the 4,000 children who will visit IslandWood this school year, the four-day experience will be their first chance to spend extended time in nature. Our unique residential and school-based programs are designed to engage all children by using the environment as a context for learning important concepts in social studies, language, and science.“The more experiences that kids have in nature, the more they grow to care for it. How can we expect them to be stewards of the environment or care for it if they don’t even know what it is?”
Katherine Berg, Teacher – Bailey Gatzert Elementary in SeattleWe are dedicated to providing exceptional educational experiences for all students regardless of their ability to pay. Tuition for a student to attend our School Overnight Program is approximately $265, but the actual cost is more than twice that amount for their four-day residential experience. Charitable contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations through our leadership giving program, annual fund campaign, grants, and special events help us underwrite more than half of our actual programming costs, so we can continue to inspire and excite children with these life-changing educational experiences they will remember forever.
In addition, our volunteers play an integral role in providing their time and talent in support of our staff every day. We are grateful for their dedication and support of our programs as board members, committee members, docents, general volunteers, and interns.
