Special Needs Visitors in The Learning Tree at IslandWood

IslandWood educator Karen Salsbury talks about owls with Mathew Strachan while Axel Brandt-Ericksen and Kyle Melby look on in the "Learning Tree," a new outdoor classroom designed to be a more accessible tree-house for people with disabilities who visit the IslandWood campus. 35 Bainbridge Island School District students with special needs visited IslandWood in May through a program started by School District Physical Therapist, Sue Steindorf.

Barred Owl

The Barred Owl is a medium-sized owl streaked with white horizontal barring on the chest and vertical barring on the belly. They prefer moist coniferous forests, wooded swamps, and woodlands near waterways as habitats. Unlike our image of nocturnal creatures, barred owls are also often active in the daytime.
